What design files do manufacturers need for custom bracelets?

Send a dimensioned PDF or clearly annotated drawing for design intent, together with the editable source file when available. Vector artwork such as AI, EPS, or SVG is appropriate for logos and line-based graphics because it can be scaled without the pixelation associated with raster images. For three-dimensional development, STEP is generally more useful than an image because it represents CAD geometry that can be inspected and modified. STL can communicate a surface mesh, but it may not contain editable solid features, material information, or manufacturing tolerances. A file extension alone does not make a package production-ready; naming, revision control, units, and clearly identified views are equally important.

A sketch can begin the discussion, but it is normally a concept reference rather than production data. It should show the intended front, side, and top views, approximate dimensions, closure concept, logo position, and any areas that must remain visually aligned. Perspective sketches can distort proportions, so the manufacturer must translate them into a dimensioned drawing or CAD model before tooling. Mark uncertain features as decisions required rather than allowing them to be interpreted silently. Sending several labelled sketches with one approved revision is more reliable than sending conflicting images, screenshots, and messages.

Specify the inside circumference or finished internal length, internal width or diameter, overall height, cross-section, wall or plate thickness, opening size, hinge or clasp dimensions, and the location of decorative elements. For a hinged or articulated style, identify pin diameter, joint clearance, segment count, and the closed and open positions. Dimensions should include units and should distinguish nominal sizes from allowable tolerances. Also indicate the measurement method; an inside measurement, outside measurement, and centerline measurement can produce different results. Size grading for multiple wrist sizes should be shown as a table rather than inferred from a single drawing.

Vector artwork is strongly preferred for engraving, cutting, stamping, and raised or recessed logo development because paths define geometry independently of image resolution. The file should identify the intended engraving depth or relief direction when known, minimum line width, minimum gap, location, orientation, and relationship to the bracelet curvature. Small text should be supplied as outlined lettering or with the font identified, since an unavailable font can change the result. A raster PNG or JPEG may show appearance, but it does not reliably define paths, scale, or manufacturable line spacing. The final minimum detail depends on the selected process, surface radius, and material.

A 3D model lets the tooling team evaluate curvature, thickness transitions, undercuts, parting strategy, clasp movement, and the relationship between mating components before a mold is prepared. STEP files are commonly used for transferable solid CAD data because ISO 10303 defines the STEP standard for exchanging product-model information. A shaded rendering or STL mesh can communicate form, but it may conceal open surfaces, inverted normals, gaps, or non-editable geometry. Include the CAD unit system, coordinate orientation, separate component files, and a reference drawing. The approved 3D revision should match the 2D drawing; discrepancies between them require written confirmation before tooling.

Use a finish schedule rather than relying on color shown on a screen. Identify the base material, plating or coating type if selected, visible and non-visible surfaces, gloss or texture direction, polished or brushed zones, color reference, logo treatment, and any areas that must remain free of plating. Add photographs or physical references when a texture is difficult to describe, but label them as appearance references rather than exact color standards. Separate cosmetic requirements from performance requirements, such as wear, adhesion, or restricted-substance expectations. The manufacturer should confirm which tests apply to the target market and product construction before the quotation and sample approval.
