Plating quality concerns the deposited layer, including color consistency, coverage, adhesion, and resistance to the specified wear environment. A bright appearance can hide poor preparation, so inspect an unplated sample or a cross-section when possible, then compare it with the finished sample under neutral lighting. Request representative samples showing flat areas, recesses, corners, soldered joints, and high-contact zones rather than judging one polished display face.

The supplier should disclose defects that may affect appearance, durability, or dimensional fit, including porosity, pinholes, pits, scratches, embedded polishing compound, over-rounded edges, incomplete coverage in recesses, discoloration, and exposed base metal. Buyers should define acceptable limits using annotated photographs, approved reference samples, and an agreed inspection level rather than relying on terms such as premium finish. Brass is a copper-zinc alloy, and its surface condition can vary with casting, stamping, machining, soldering, and heat exposure. A useful approval process checks first samples from every major geometry, not only a simple test plaque.

First identify the actual finish system and substrate, because an adhesion method must suit the coating and jewelry construction. There is no single suitable thickness for every design. Required thickness depends on the deposit material, barrier layers, surface preparation, geometry, contact with skin or clothing, sweat exposure, friction, cleaning habits, and the intended service period. Recesses and sharp transitions may plate differently from broad faces, while polishing can change the effective surface before plating. Ask the supplier to state the nominal or minimum thickness, measurement method, locations, and tolerance. X-ray fluorescence can provide rapid non-destructive screening, but readings are influenced by substrate, curvature, and layer construction; production approval should use a defined sampling plan and, when necessary, an independent laboratory method.

Each polishing stage removes or refines surface irregularities, but excessive material removal can soften engraving, reduce prong definition, widen gaps, and alter dimensional relationships. The risk is higher on small relief patterns, filigree, sharp channels, and cast surfaces with limited metal thickness. Compare the approved raw, pre-polished, and finished samples using magnification and measured critical dimensions. A capable custom jewelry manufacturer should identify protected details and specify which areas receive a mirror, satin, brushed, or intentionally textured treatment. Approval should focus on repeatability across a batch, because a single visually strong sample does not establish process control.

Request a finish specification, material declaration, supplier or batch traceability, inspection report, and test reports relevant to the destination market. For skin-contact jewelry, nickel release requirements are commonly evaluated under standards such as EN 1811, while chemical restrictions may involve the EU REACH framework; RoHS addresses restricted substances in electrical and electronic equipment and should not be treated as a complete jewelry safety assessment. Ask whether documents apply to the exact alloy, plating stack, colorant, and clear coat used in production. Confirm report dates, sample identity, laboratory scope, and destination-country requirements before approving a bulk order.
